Why Organizations Participate

Four kinds of access.

Innovative ideas are valuable — but organizations consistently tell us the greatest value is engaging directly with Colorado's next generation of talent. The Challenge is an innovation program and a statewide talent pipeline at once.

Bring a challenge. Leave with talent, solutions, and partners.

  • 01
Access TalentEngineering, business, computer science, environmental science, design, policy, research, and entrepreneurship students — engaged before the market meets them.
  • 02
Access SolutionsReal-world problem solving on your most pressing challenges.
  • 03
Access InnovationFresh perspectives and new ideas, unconstrained by "how it's always been done."
  • 04
Access PartnershipsConnections across Colorado's innovation ecosystem, and a durable relationship with the host universities.

Partners commonly use the Challenge to recruit interns, identify future employees, build university relationships, raise brand visibility, and test new ideas against diverse student teams.

Two Ways to Partner

Back the ecosystem,
or back a challenge.

The Challenge works with industry, nonprofit, government, and community organizations. You can support the program without sponsoring a problem — or put a real challenge and a real bounty in front of student teams.

No challenge required

Supporting Partner

Invest in the Challenge ecosystem and help create the experience for students across Colorado.

  • Recognition as an official CIC Supporting Partner
  • Logo on the event website and marketing materials
  • Recognition at the Kickoff and the Celebration Dinner
  • Access to student talent and networking events
  • Recruit interns and future employees
  • Mentor student teams

Supporting Partners do not submit a bounty challenge.

Sponsor a problem

Bounty Partner

Put a real organizational problem in front of interdisciplinary teams, and fund the bounty that rewards solving it.

  • Select a bounty level and provide a challenge statement
  • Define the evaluation criteria you'll judge against
  • Meet the student teams and stay engaged through the sprint
  • Judge the final solutions and award your bounty

The bounty is performance-based. You only pay it if a team meets the winning criteria you set. If no team clears your bar, no bounty is awarded.

How It Works

From challenge partner
to lasting partnership
— in eight steps.

A collaborative ecosystem driving real-world impact.

1

Challenge Partner

Organizations submit real-world challenges and collaborate with CIC to define success.

2

Problem Statement

The challenge is shaped into a clear, actionable problem statement — pressure-tested with you before it reaches a single student.

3

Student Teams

Interdisciplinary student teams are recruited and matched to the challenge — at least two per challenge, so the solutions compete.

4

Innovation Sprint

Teams engage in a structured, time-bound sprint with expert mentorship and resources.

5

Solution Development

Teams research, ideate, prototype, and refine practical solutions.

6

Final Presentation

Teams present their solutions to a panel of judges and stakeholders.

7

Bounty Award Cash Prizes

Winning teams receive a monetary bounty in recognition of their impact.

8

Potential Pilot / Partnership

Partners explore pilots and partnerships to bring solutions to life and create lasting impact.

Your Commitment

Light lift. Close to the work.

The program is designed to keep partners close to the teams developing solutions to their challenge — without consuming your calendar.

You Add Your Criteria

Every team is judged on the same six Challenge criteria. On top of those, you define what a winning solution looks like for your organization — published with your problem statement, before the sprint starts.

Questions Come to You

Your challenge gets its own card on the platform. Teams post questions there, you get an email, and you answer when it suits you — no standing meetings to schedule.

At Least Two Teams Compete

We match a minimum of two teams to every challenge. That turns your decision from a yes-or-no judgment call into a genuine choice between competing approaches.

You Award the Bounty

You judge your own challenge at the Celebration Dinner, against the Challenge rubric and the criteria you added. If no team meets your bar, no bounty is awarded — the standard stays yours throughout.

In 2025, partners funded $8,500+ in bounties —
including the $4,000 flagship that produced an affordable-housing mapping tool.

Intellectual Property

Settled before the sprint,
not after it.

The Challenge uses a tiered IP framework that scales with the bounty level — so both you and the students know where you stand before anyone writes a line of code. This is agreed during alignment, never negotiated on the night.

Tier 1
Exploration
  • Students retain ownership of all IP
  • You receive a non-exclusive opportunity to review the ideas
  • Open door to discuss future collaboration
Tier 2
Prototype / Pilot
  • Students retain ownership
  • You receive a first right to negotiate licensing or a pilot
  • Optional sponsored continuation pathway
Tier 3
Strategic Innovation
  • IP terms negotiated before the challenge opens
  • May include shared ownership, licensing, or sponsored research
  • Custom agreements where the work demands them

Need something bespoke? Organizations can put a custom IP agreement in place before the challenge begins — the usual reason being confidential information or proprietary technology in scope.
